There is something so lovely about a handmade Valentine that looks like it has come straight from an old sewing basket. These folk Valentine hearts are made with scraps of felt or recycled wool, vintage-style buttons, lace, trims and little embellishments — all those tiny bits and pieces we tend to save because “they’ll be useful one day.” Well, this is their day.
This is a sweet little scrap fabric Valentine craft for anyone who enjoys simple hand sewing, rustic decorating, or making heartfelt gifts without needing a trolley full of supplies. The finished hearts can be tucked into a gift basket, hung from a cupboard handle, displayed in a bowl, or even scented with a little lavender or potpourri to make a pretty handmade sachet.
I love projects like this because they don’t need to be perfect. A slightly wonky stitch, an odd button, or a bit of lace that doesn’t quite match only makes them more charming. Think vintage Valentine, farmhouse folk art, and a good excuse to finally raid that button tin.
1) First cut out two equally sized hearts from your choice of fabric.
2) With your needle and red thread sew on the buttons/findings of your choice onto the front of the heart.
3) Next whip stitch your fringe/lace/tinsel around the heart.

4) Now stitch together the back of the heart to the front of the heart leaving an opening at the top.

5) Stuff the heart with a cotton ball and then stitch it closed.

Display your hearts in a bowl or basket. These are easy to make and inexpensive, and look so cute displayed around the house for Valentine’s Day.

These hearts are great!!! I’m going to make small hearts (silver dollar size) and add pin backs — will be perfect brooches!
So Cute! Love It!
LOVE IT:)
awesome
Fill them with potpourri and keep them in your drawers to make your clothes smell nice. Small children would need a lot of help or they could use fabric glue. Needles are for older kids.
so cool
so cute! i am going to make these as pillows with Happy Valentines Day on them instead of making Valentines. thanks for the pattern! 😉
