Instructions
Make a magical handmade toy with this sweet plushie mermaid sewing project. This soft fabric mermaid doll is a fun and colorful craft for anyone who loves whimsical sewing projects, handmade gifts, and ocean-inspired toys. With her soft fleece body, bright tail, yarn hair, and simple stitched details, she is full of personality and perfect for imaginative play.
This DIY plushie mermaid is a lovely project for using polar fleece, felt scraps, leftover yarn, and toy filling from your craft stash. You can customize her with different hair colors, tail fabrics, skin tones, and facial expressions to create a one-of-a-kind mermaid doll that feels extra special.
Whether you are sewing her as a birthday gift, a beach-themed nursery decoration, a handmade toy for a child, or simply as a fun weekend craft, this plush mermaid pattern is a charming way to turn simple materials into something soft, cuddly, and magical.
Step 1: Download the Mermaid Pattern.
Step 2: Cut out all your pieces – the tail from the multi-colored fleece, the body and arms from the flesh colored fleece and the bikini in scraps from the multi-colored fleece.
Step 3: Sew your bikini to the top section of the body – front and back.
Step 4: Stitch the top to the bottom – front piece and the back piece.
Step 5: Stitch the front and back together with right side facing inwards. Leave a gap for turning and filling with Toy Filling or Wadding .
Step 6: Stitch around the arms, right side facing inwards and leave a gap for turning and filling.
Step 7: Once they are filled, close up the gap and stitch them in place.
Step 8: Cut very thin strips for the hair. I used the edging of the Polar fleece, which is usually trimmed off this seams to curl better (if you do not have the color you need, you can use wool).
Step 9: To finish off put your face features on.
That’s it!
