Knitted Heartfelt Robot

Knitted Heartfelt Robot

This cute little knitted robot is a perfect Valentine’s Day gift or a symbol of geeky affection any time of year. Of course you could leave off the heart or stitch on a different design if you’d rather, too.

What you need

One skein Vanna’s Glamour in color 186, Platinum, or about 200 yards (185 meters) of sport weight yarn of your choice
Scraps of sport weight yarn in red and blue or colors of your choice; I used Lion Brand Bonbons
Set of 4 size 4 US (3.5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles (the head and body are worked back and forth in rows using 2 needles, while the legs and arms are worked in the round)
Yarn needle
Fiber fill
Gauge
Not critical, but I got 24 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.

Instructions

Knit the head

Cast on 18 stitches.

Work in stockinette stitch for 3 inches (7.6 cm). Knit the next wrong side row.
Continue in stockinette a further 3 inches (7.6 cm). Knit the next wrong side row.

Continue in this manner until you have worked 4 sections of stockinette. Bind off.

Pick a square and pick up and knit 18 stitches along one side.

Work in stockinette stitch for 3 inches (7.6 cm). Bind off.

Repeat on the other side.

Using contrasting yarn, stitch a face onto one of the squares. I worked 4-stitch squares for the eyes and nose and made a little smile the same width as the rest of the facial features.

Fold the piece into a cube and sew up all but one side. Fill with stuffing and sew up the remaining side. Set aside.

Knit the Body

Cast on 24 stitches.

Work in stockinette stitch for 4 inches (10 cm). Knit the next wrong side row.

Continue in stockinette a further 4 inches (10 cm). Knit the next wrong side row.

Continue in this manner until you have worked 4 sections of stockinette. Bind off

Repeat on the other side.

Use red yarn to stitch a heart shape on the left side of one of the squares. I started at the bottom of mine with a single stitch, worked 3 stitches on the next row and 5 on the next. Then I worked 2 on each side for 2 rows and 1 on each side for 1 row.

Knit A Heart Pattern

Fold the piece into a cube and sew up all but one side. Fill with stuffing and sew up the remaining side. Set aside.

Knit the Legs and Arms

Cast on 15 stitches. Divide onto 3 needles (5 stitches each) and join in round.

Knit for 4 inches (10 cm) for each arm and 5 inches (12.7 cm) for each leg. You will knit 4 pieces total.

When desired length is reached, cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Slip the stitches onto the yarn needle and pull the end closed. Run the yarn through the stitches a couple of times, the put the needle through the end of the tube and cut the yarn on the inside.

Stuff each limb and sew closed, then sew to the body.

Sew the head to the body.

Hug.
