Instructions
This Christmas gift pillow is such a sweet little holiday sewing project, and honestly, it is one of those makes that looks far fancier than the effort involved. With a simple square pillow shape, festive fabric, silver ribbon, and a little bow on top, you can turn an ordinary cushion into a soft handmade Christmas present for your sofa, guest bed, entry bench, or holiday display.
This easy Christmas sewing project is perfect for using up red fabric from your stash — especially those leftover fat quarters and festive prints that somehow multiply every December. You can make it small and cute like the original, or size it up for a larger statement pillow if your Christmas decorating style leans more “festive explosion” than “subtle seasonal touch.” No judgement here.
You only need basic sewing supplies, stuffing, ribbon, and a sewing machine, making this a lovely beginner-friendly Christmas craft or a quick handmade gift idea. If you are making a few of these for holiday décor or craft stall stock, it is worth keeping extra pillow stuffing, metallic ribbon, and Christmas cotton fabric on hand from places like Amazon, Fat Quarter Shop, or Connecting Threads so you can batch them without stopping halfway through because the ribbon has mysteriously vanished into the craft room Bermuda Triangle.
The finished pillow looks like a wrapped Christmas gift, but instead of ending up under the tree for five minutes, it becomes part of your handmade holiday decorating year after year.
1. Cut our your fabric into 2 10×10″ squares. This makes the pillow small and cute but if you want a larger pillow, you’ll need to cut these squares out a bit larger.
2. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon the same length as your pillow- 10″ for this pillow. Place them onto the top of ONE of the fabric squares in a cross and pin them down.
3. Stitch them down onto the front of the fabric square, remove the pins.
4. Place your 2 fabric squares right sides together and pin. Stitch around the outside 1/4″ away from the edge, going around every side but leaving about a 4″ opening on the bottom to flip right side out.
5. Flip right side out.
6. Stuff your pillow, being sure to get stuffing in the corners, stuffing it pretty firmly.
7. Use a needle and thread to stitch up the bottom opening that you used to flip it right side out and stuff.
8. Cut a 10″ or longer piece of ribbon and tie it into a bow. Stitch (or glue) it onto the top front of your pillow.
