DIY Mini Bottle Suncatchers With Crystals and Air Plants

These miniature bottle suncatchers are made by filling small corked glass bottles with tiny air plants, moss or decorative stones, then wrapping the bottles with jewellery wire and adding colourful beads, chain and crystal prisms.

They are beginner-friendly, inexpensive to make and easy to customise with different colours, charms and natural fillings. Hang them in a sunny window, from a covered porch or near a glass door where the crystal can catch plenty of light.

What you need

3–5 mini glass bottles with cork stoppers (approximately 2–5 cm / 1–2 inches tall)

Mini faux air plants or tiny live air plants

Small decorative pebbles, crystal chips or preserved moss

20–22 gauge jewellery wire (gold, silver or copper)

Jewellery chain

Jump rings

Assorted faceted crystal beads in coordinating colours

Large crystal prism pendants or teardrop crystals

Optional charms (moon, stars, butterflies, leaves, dragonflies, mushrooms or hearts)

Instructions

Step 1 – Prepare the Bottles

Wash the glass bottles if necessary and allow them to dry completely.

Add a small layer of decorative pebbles, crystal chips or preserved moss to the bottom of each bottle. This helps hold the plant in place while adding a decorative touch.

Carefully place the mini air plant inside the bottle. If using faux plants, trim the stem so it sits naturally inside the bottle without being overcrowded.

Insert the cork securely.

Tip: If these will be handled frequently, add a tiny drop of clear craft glue beneath the cork before inserting it.

Step 2 – Wrap the Bottle

Cut approximately 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) of jewellery wire.

Starting near the base of the bottle, wrap the wire around the bottle several times to anchor it.

Continue wrapping upward in a loose spiral, occasionally crossing the wire over itself to create an organic, vine-like appearance.

Don’t worry about making the wraps perfectly even—the irregular look adds handmade charm.

Leave about 8 cm (3 inches) of wire at the top.

Step 3 – Create the Hanging Loop

Using round nose pliers, bend the remaining wire into a neat loop above the cork.

Wrap the wire tail around the base of the loop two or three times to secure it.

Trim any excess wire and tuck the cut end neatly against the wrapping.

Attach a jump ring through the loop.

Step 4 – Add Decorative Beads

Thread several faceted crystal beads onto a head pin or a short piece of jewellery wire.

Create a small beaded connector above the bottle by attaching it between two jump rings.

Mix different colours of crystals for extra sparkle. Iridescent, pink, aqua, lavender and clear crystals all catch the light beautifully.

Step 5 – Attach the Hanging Chain

Cut a length of jewellery chain to your preferred finished size, usually 15–25 cm (6–10 inches).

Attach one end to the beaded connector using a jump ring.

Add another jump ring or larger hanging ring to the top of the chain for easy hanging.

Step 6 – Add the Crystal Prism

Attach another jump ring to the bottom of the bottle’s wire wrapping.

Connect a large crystal prism or teardrop crystal pendant to this ring.

The added weight helps the suncatcher hang straight while the prism scatters colourful rainbows when placed in direct sunlight.

Step 7 – Personalise Your Suncatcher
