Today I’m sharing my favorite way to create DIY sunflower mason jar centerpieces that’ll brighten any table—from summer BBQs to Thanksgiving spreads. This easy craft uses simple supplies (many of which you probably already have tucked away) and can be customized for any season or occasion.
I’ve made these as gifts for teachers, housewarmings, and even a few just because my kitchen needed a pick-me-up. And yes, they always get compliments.

What you need
1–3 Mason jars (quart or pint size)
Acrylic paint (white, cream, sage, mustard)
Twine, ribbon, or raffia
Faux or fresh sunflowers
Floral foam or filler pebbles
Sandpaper (optional, for distressing)
Hot glue gun or craft glue
Optional: chalkboard tags, buttons, burlap scraps
Instructions
Step 1: Paint Your Jars
Give your jars a good wash and let them dry completely. Apply two coats of acrylic paint in your chosen color. Chalk-style paints work beautifully for that soft, matte farmhouse look.
Tip: Don’t overthink it. Imperfections add to the rustic charm.
Step 2: Distress the Edges (Optional)
Once dry, lightly sand over raised lettering and edges for that lovely worn look. Totally optional, but it really does add depth.
Step 3: Add Your Trim
Wrap twine or ribbon around the neck of the jar and tie a bow. You can even hot glue a burlap flower, a button, or a little wooden heart on top.
If you’re feeling fancy, add a mini chalkboard tag with a message like “Give Thanks” or “Welcome.”
Step 4: Arrange the Sunflowers
Pop in a bit of floral foam if using faux flowers, then arrange your sunflowers inside. I like to mix in some greenery or wheat stalks for texture.
Fresh sunflowers? Just add water and skip the foam. Easy!
Step 5: Style and Display
Group a few jars together on a tray, sprinkle in some acorns, mini pumpkins, or pinecones—whatever suits the season. These also look darling lined up along a picnic table or mantel.
Seasonal Twist Ideas
- Autumn: Add mini gourds, cinnamon sticks, and burnt orange ribbon
- Spring: Mix in daisies, lavender, or baby’s breath
- Christmas: Swap sunflowers for red berries and evergreens, and tie on a plaid bow
- Easter: Use pastel paints and tuck in faux eggs or bunny picks
Storage Tip
If you’re using faux flowers, store each jar upright in a box between seasons. You’ll thank yourself later when you pull them out, still fluffed and fabulous.
The first time I made one of these, it was for my daughter’s Year 6 teacher. I paired the jar with a little apple-scented candle and tucked it all in a kraft paper gift bag. She nearly cried when she opened it—turns out sunflowers were her late mum’s favourite. Never underestimate the power of handmade.
If you’re looking for a project that’s low-fuss but full of impact, this sunflower mason jar centerpiece is it. Whether you’re dressing up a table for Sunday lunch or gifting a little sunshine to someone special, this craft brings beauty and heart together in the simplest way.
And let’s be honest—some days, a sunflower on the kitchen bench is exactly what we need.
