Teal Stacked Pumpkin Planter – Welcoming Special Needs Trick-or-Treaters This Halloween

Teal Stacked Pumpkin Planter – Welcoming Special Needs Trick-or-Treaters This Halloween

If you’ve spotted teal pumpkins popping up on porches in October, you’ve just witnessed a heartwarming movement in action. The Teal Pumpkin Project lets families know that your Halloween treats are allergy-friendly or non-food items—making the night more inclusive for children with food allergies, sensory sensitivities, or other special needs.
This year, let’s take that teal pumpkin idea and turn it into a show-stopping stacked pumpkin planter that doubles as your porch décor and a beacon of welcome for all little ghouls and goblins.

What you need

Optional: vinyl lettering or a wooden sign reading “Allergy-Friendly Treats Here”

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the Pumpkins

If your foam pumpkins have stems, gently twist or cut them off to create a flat stacking surface. For the top pumpkin, keep the stem intact for a natural look.

If they are plastic then remove the handles.

2. Paint Them Teal

Apply 2–3 coats of teal paint, allowing each coat to dry completely. If using spray paint, work in a well-ventilated area and apply light, even layers for a smooth finish.

Pro tip: You can mix a drop of white paint into your teal for the top pumpkin to create an ombré effect for extra dimension.  I painted the faces back on using black paint as my plastic pumpkins had molded faces.

3. Create the Planter Holes

On the largest pumpkin (bottom tier), cut a hole wide enough to place your potted flowers inside. If stacking more than two pumpkins, repeat this step on the middle tier.

4. Stack & Secure

Once dry, stack your pumpkins largest to smallest, securing each layer with strong craft glue. Allow glue to cure fully before moving.

5. Add Your Plants

Nestle pots of fall blooms or greenery into the openings. For real plants, make sure the pot can be removed for watering.

6. Add Your Sign

Attach a small wooden sign or vinyl decal that says “Teal Pumpkin Project – Allergy-Friendly Treats Here” so guests understand the meaning.

Display & Enjoy

Place your teal stacked pumpkin planter at your front door, on the porch steps, or beside a candy station table. When the trick-or-treaters arrive, hand out small toys, stickers, glow sticks, or other non-food goodies to keep the night safe and fun for everyone.

Non-Food Treat Ideas

  • Temporary tattoos
  • Puzzle erasers

By adding a beautiful, welcoming teal pumpkin display to your Halloween décor, you’re not just decorating—you’re making your community a little kinder, one trick-or-treater at a time.
