Crochet A Giant Floor Cushion

This is a vintage pattern that has not been recently tested. If you find an error or have successfully knit this pattern then please let us know so we can note it down.

What you need

Worsted weight yarn:
45 oz in Blue
9 oz in White
8 oz each in Red, Green and Yellow
Size F crochet hook
Pillow 36″ x 36″
Tapestry needle

Instructions

Cover measures 35″ x 35″. Each square measures 16 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ excluding edging

Gauge
18 hdc and 11 rows to 4″ worked on size F Hook. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Note: The pillow purchased should be 1″ larger than the pillow cover to ensure a smooth, snug fit.

Striped square (make 4)

Using Red, ch 10 and join with a sl st to first ch to form a ring.
1st round: Ch 2 to count as first hdc, then work 15 hdc in ring, join with a sl st to 2nd of ch-2. 16 hdc.

2nd round: Ch2 to count as first hdc, 2 hdc in same place as sl st – 1 corner formed -, * 1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc, 3 hdc all in next hdc – corner formed-, rep from * twice more, 1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc, join with a sl st to 2nd of ch-2. Fasten off.

3rd round: Join white to 2nd hdc of one corner group, ch2, (1 hdc, ch l and 2 hdc) all in same hdc, *(ch 1, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) twice, ch 1, skip next hdc, (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in 2nd hdc of next corner group, rep from * twice more, (ch 1, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) twice, ch 1, join with a slst to 2nd of ch-2. 3 ch-1 sps between corner groups.

4th round: Using white, slst over first 2 hdc and in ch-1 sp at corner, ch2, (lhdc, chl and 2hdc) all in same sp, *1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc, (1 hdc in next ch-1 sp, 1 hdc in next hdc) 3 times, 1 hdc in next hdc, (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in ch-1 sp at corner, rep from * to end of round, omitting last corner group at end of last rep, join with a si st to 2nd of ch-2. 9 hdc between corner groups. Fasten off.

5th round: Join Blue to ch-1 sp at one corner, ch 2, (1 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in same sp, *(ch 1, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) to within 2nd hdc of next corner group, ch 1, skip next hdc, (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in ch-1 sp at corner, rep from * to end of round, omitting last corner group at the end of the last rep, join with a slst to 2nd of ch-2. 7sps between corner groups. 6th round Using Blue, slst over first 2 hdc and in ch-1 sp at corner, ch2, (lhdc, chl and 2hdc) all in same sp, 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc, (1 hdc in next ch-1 sp, 1 hdc in next hdc) to within 2nd hdc of next corner group, 1 hdc in / next hdc, (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in ch-1 sp at corner, rep from * to end of round, omitting last corner group at end of last rep, join with a si st to 2nd of ch-2.

17 hdc between corner groups. Fasten off.

Cont to rep 5th and 6th rounds, working in a color sequence of 2 rounds Yellow, 2 rounds Green, 2 rounds Red, 2 rounds White and 2 rounds Blue until 2nd round of 3rd White stripe has been worked. Fasten off.

This completes one square. Work 3 more squares in the same way.

Solid-color square (make 4)

Using blue throughout, work first and 2nd rounds as for striped square. 3rd round Slst in top of 2nd hdc of 3 hdc at corner, ch 2 to count as first hdc, (1 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in same hdc for corner group, *(chl, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) twice, ch 1, skip next hdc, (2hdc, chl and 2hdc) all in 2nd hdc of next corner group, rep from twice more, (ch 1, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) twice, ch 1, join with a slst to 2nd of ch-2. 3 ch-1 sps between corner groups.

4th round: SI st over first 2 hdc and in ch-1 sp at corner, ch2, (1 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in same sp, *1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc, (1 hdc in next ch-1 sp, 1 hdc in next hdc) 3 times, 1 hdc in next hdc, (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in ch-1 sp at corner, rep from * to end of round, omitting last corner group at end of last rep, join with a si st to 2nd of ch-2.

5th round: SI st over first 2 hdc and in ch-1 sp at corner, ch2, (1 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in same sp, *(chl, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) to within 2nd hdc of next corner group, ch 1, skip next hdc, (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in ch-1 sp at corner, rep from * to end of round, omitting last corner group at end of last rep, join with a slst to 2nd of ch-2. Rep 4th and 5th rounds until square measures same as striped square. Fasten off. Work 3 more squares in the same way.

To finish
Weave in all loose ends on WS of each square, keeping each color in its own stripe. With RS of two striped squares tog and
using White yarn, join one edge of the squares tog with a flat seam. Join the other two striped squares in the same way. Now join these two pieces to make one large square. Join the solid-color squares in the same way.

Edging
With RS of one large square facing insert hook in one corner space and draw a loop of Blue through, ch2 (lhdc, chl and 2hdc) all in same sp
*(ch 1, skip next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc along edge to corner, ch 1, skip next hdc (2 hdc, ch 1 and 2 hdc) all in corner sp rep from * to end of round, omitting last corner group at end of last rep, join with a sl st to 2nd of ch-2.

Next round Work as for 4th round of solid square. Fasten off.

Work around outer edge of other large square in the same way. Weave in all loose ends on WS of work joining large squares

With WS facing, join in Blue, working through double thickness work a row o sc around 3 sides of cover, working 1 sc in each hdc and 2sc in each space a corners. Fasten off.

Insert pillow, then join remaining seam. All done!
