What you need

  • Yarn: Orange and Forest Green (DK or light worsted recommended) 
  • Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) circular or double-pointed needles for body, and 2 mm (US 0) double-pointed needles for stem 
  • Stitch markers 
  • Tapestry needle

To fit multiple head sizes:

  • Cast on 84 (90, 96, 102, 108) stitches

Hat Body (Pumpkin Section):

  1. With orange yarn, cast on 84 (90, 96, 102, 108) sts using circular or double-pointed needles size 3.5 mm / US 4. 
  2. Purl 1 round. 
  3. Continue in stockinette stitch (knit every round). 

Rolling Edge Marker:

  • When the piece measures 6 cm / 2½”, place a marker to indicate the rolling edge. 
  • From this point, continue measuring the length of the hat. 

Shaping the Pumpkin:
4. When the hat measures 7 (8, 9, 10, 12) cm / 2¾” (3″) (3½”) (4″) (4¾”), decrease stitches evenly as follows:

  • Decrease 3 (0, 6, 3, 0) sts = 81 (90, 90, 99, 108) sts remain. 
  1. Place 9 (10, 10, 11, 12) markers evenly around the piece, about 9 stitches apart. 

Rib and Decreases:
6. Begin working according to chart/diagram A.2 (pumpkin rib shaping). Continue knitting/purling as set in orange until complete.

Stem (Green Section):
7. Switch to forest green yarn and continue decreases:

  • On every other round, decrease 1 stitch to the right of each marker. 
  • Continue until only 9 (10, 10, 11, 12) stitches remain. 
  1. Change to 2 mm double-pointed needles and work 3 cm / 1″ in stockinette stitch to form the stem. 
  2. Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure. 

Finishing

  • Weave in all ends. 
  • Lightly block if desired.
