Free Knitting Pattern – Flying Witches Bookmark

Free Knitting Pattern – Flying Witches Bookmark

Looking for a quick and spooky knitting project? This Flying Witches Bookmark is the perfect Halloween accessory for book lovers. The double knitting technique makes it fully reversible, with the witch motif standing out in contrasting colors on both sides. It’s a small project, so you only need a bit of leftover sock yarn to bring it to life.

What you need

Size

One size: approx. 5.5 cm wide x 16.5 cm long
(Your finished size may vary slightly depending on yarn, gauge, and tension.)

Needles: Two double-pointed 2.0 mm needles or a 2.0 mm circular needle (do not join, you’ll be knitting flat).

Yarn: Leftover 4-ply sock yarn, about 10–15 g of each color.

Main color (background): Yellow (or orange, brown, or green)

Contrast color (motif): Black

Gauge: 7 stitches x 8 rows = 1 x 1 inch in double knitting.

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Instructions

The bookmark is knitted flat in double knitting, which means you’ll be working pairs of stitches—one knit stitch in the front color, followed by a purl stitch in the back color.

The witch motif is charted. Work from the chart bottom to top.

Border stitches (2 pairs at each side) are not shown in the chart but must be included in your knitting.

Instructions

Cast On:
Cast on 110 stitches as follows:

53 pairs (a knit and purl stitch per pair) = 106 stitches

plus 4 stitches for the borders = 110 total.
Alternate colors when casting on (one yellow, one black) so you have paired stitches from the start.

Borders:

The first 2 stitches and last 2 stitches are worked as border stitches.

At the beginning of each row: slip the first 2 border stitches.

At the end of each row: purl the last 2 stitches together.

Working the Chart:

Always knit the stitch shown in the chart color, with both yarns held at the back.

Then purl the second stitch of the pair with both yarns in front, using the opposite color.

This creates a double-knit reversible fabric.

Reading the Chart:

Row 1: work from right to left.

Row 2: work from left to right.

Continue alternating as you move up the chart.

Remember, front and back colors switch places every row!

Finishing:

Once you’ve reached the top of the chart, bind off in pattern.

Weave in loose ends neatly.

Lightly block your bookmark to open up the stitches and flatten edges.

Chart

Use the Flying Witches chart (see image above) to knit your motif. The witches will appear flying across the length of your bookmark.

This spooky little knit makes a wonderful Halloween gift for bookworms—or keep it for yourself as a seasonal reading companion.
