DIY Knitted Snake Scarf

DIY Knitted Snake Scarf

This whole project is worked in a Garter Stitch, and would be good for beginners. Feel free to play around with switching colors and such!

What you need

I used Lion Brand Jiffy about 6 oz, (Sport weight would work as well)
Needles: US 11 (8 mm)
Red yarn for tongue
Black yarn (embroider eyes), or Buttons/ Beads to sew on for eyes, whichever is preferred
Crochet hook for tongue, and sewing needle and thread or embroidery needle for eyes

Instructions

Stitches used:

k: knit

kfb: knit one in the front of loop and one in the back of the loop on the same stitch, an increase.

k2tog: knit 2 stitches together, a decrease.

Start Tail:

Cast on 3 stitches

Knit 5 rows

kfb, k, kfb (5 sts)

Knit 5 rows

k1, kfb, k1, kfb, k1 (7 sts)

Knit 5 rows

k1, kfb, k3, kfb, k1 (9 sts)

Knit 5 rows

k1, kfb, k5, kfb, k1 (11 sts)

Knit 5 rows

k1, kfb, k7, kfb, k1 (13 sts)

Knit until project measures around 42″ or desired length

Shape Neck:

k1, k2tog, k7, k2tog, k1 (11 sts)

k1, k2tog, k5, k2tog, k1 (9 sts)

k1, k2tog, k3, k2tog, k1 (7 sts)

Knit 2 rows

k1, kfb, k3, kfb, k1 (9 sts)

k1, kfb, k5, kfb, k1 (11 sts)

k1, kfb, k7, kfb, k1 (13 sts)

Knit 15 rows

Shape Snout:

k1, k2tog, k7, k2tog, k1 (11 sts)

Knit 3 rows

k1, k2tog, k5, k2tog, k1 (9 sts)

Knit 3 rows

k1, k2tog, k3, k2tog, k1 (7 sts)

Knit 1 row

k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 (5 sts)

Knit 1 row

Bind off.

* Embroider or sew on eyes. Take 3 pieces of red yarn double the desired length for the tongue. Fold yarn in half and pull through the middle of the snout with a crochet hook and pull ends through loop to make a tassel of 6 strings. Braid the strings to desired length, knot and cut ends. Weave in other ends of work, and enjoy! Ssssssss!

  1. I used two buttons stacked in different colors and added a yarn bow at the neck. Made two for my twin granddaughters. Really cute.

  2. Loved the pattern! I continued the pattern in reverse just for the head and got a double head which I seamed on the sides. The scarf became a puppet as well. My little granddaughters love playing with (and occasionally wearing) their snakes. thanks for a simple and fun project.
