Knitted Elf Pixie Hat

Knitted Elf Pixie Hat

Wear it! Put it on your friends' heads when they're not looking! Give everyone a turn to be a skiing pixie!

What you need

Needles: size 13-15ish dpns (mine were made from dowel rods, so they’re not a precise needle size.)
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver, baby. Two strands knit together.
Gauge: 9 sts x 13 = 4″

Instructions

This hat is knitted in the round.

Hat:
CO 44 and work four rows in k1p1 rib.

Knit 9 rows.

Row 10: Knit 20, k2tog, knit 20, k2tog.

After this, you are going to k2tog on every row in the same 2 spots, thus decreasing by 2 stitches on each round. Once you’re down to one stitch, break the yarn and pull the ends through tightly.

Earflaps:

Pick up and knit 10 sts on the bottom edge.

row 1: k2, p6, k2.
row 2: p2, k6, p2.
3: k2, p6, k2.
4: p2, k6, p2.
5: k2, p2tog, p2, p2tog, k2.
6: p2, k4, p2
7: k2, p4, k2.
8: p2, k4, p2
9: k2, p4, k2.
10: p2, k2tog, k2tog, p2.
11: k2, p2, k2.
12: p2, k2, p2.
13: k2, p2, k2.
14: p2, k2tog, p2.
15: knit, pulling the needle on every stitch so that the three stitch loops are several inches long.

Braid the three loops, tie a knot, and trim the end. Cut the other end of the yarn and weave it into the earflap.

Count 10 stitches across the cast on edge from where the first earflap was picked up and pick up 10 more stitches.

Knit the second earflap.

Really cute pixie hat! I don’t see anything about joining the knitting to make a “round” hat, or about stitching together a seam with a yarn needle and extra yarn. The pattern ends up just being one large triangle. I’m a novice knitter. Did I miss something?

I knitted for quite awhile on this project, and then realized what I knitted was way too small for even a child size. Also, when knitting in the round, why doesn’t the pattern show were to “join” your knitting to be able to knit a “round” hat. The pattern also doesn’t say anything about creating a seam down the middle by “sewing” a seam (to join the knitting so it makes a “round” hat). I am a beginner knitter but have made several projects (several shawls, knitted and loomed hats, scarves).

  3. How many skiens does this take?

  4. How do you convert this to knit on a round loom for kids & adults?

  5. Sally knits really cool items! This hat is precious! Bye Bye I’m going to go knit one now! Thanks Sally.

  6. Love this! Thank you for simplifying it too. Everything else I’ve read has made these way more complicated than necessary.

Love it! Making some changes to better suit my head and because I am not used to knitting in the round or double pointed needles! Thanks for sharing!

  8. Converted this for newborn baby on kniting loom (22 peg start) and added a braided tail to the tip – it is soo cute. Thanks for the inspiration

  9. I used size 15 circular needles to make this and it was far too small.. so I cast on 60 instead of 42 then followed the pattern as usual. It’s still a little on the tight side thou, I think 64 would of been perfect, and then knit 12 rounds before starting to cut down the stitches.

    Thanks, great hat! x Kat

  10. what size? seems nice ebut when she says the hat is knitted in the round then she means no pointy thing on the top. Right?

  11. it’s a good project which i would like to try to make for myself for winter but i am quite young and don’t quite grasp this… please help!!!

i’ve never ‘picked up’ to start a new section on a project. how do i do that?

  13. I couldnt find 13dpn so used dowels, they were prob. 15. Hat was very fast. I used red heart light and lofty. This fits small adult head.

  14. It would be nice to know what size baby this is designed for before I knit it.

  15. i loved making the hat…i made one for my best friend too and now we can wear them together

  16. it is quite good
