There are some crochet projects that require weeks of commitment, several balls of yarn and the sort of concentration that means nobody is allowed to speak to you while you’re counting stitches.

This isn’t one of them.

The Be My Valentine Scarf crochet pattern from CraftBits is a wonderfully simple little project when you want something handmade, wearable and quick enough to finish before Valentine’s Day actually arrives.

And because it is only around 2 inches wide, this isn’t a heavy winter scarf. It is more of a thin decorative crochet scarf, which makes it lovely for layering over a blouse, jumper or simple dress.

The original version is worked in bright Valentine’s red, of course, but there is absolutely no reason to stop there.

A Simple Crochet Scarf With a Pretty V-Stitch Edge

The scarf starts with a long open crochet foundation before the decorative edging is added using alternating single crochet stitches and V-stitches.

That V-stitch edging is what gives the scarf its slightly romantic, scalloped appearance without requiring complicated shaping.

The finished scarf measures approximately 65 inches long and 2 inches wide, so there is plenty of length for tying, looping or simply letting the ends hang.

You’ll need worsted-weight yarn and a 6 mm J-10 crochet hook, making this a good project for using yarn you probably already have tucked away somewhere.

And if you’re anything like me, “somewhere” means at least four baskets, two cupboards and possibly a bag behind the sofa.

Make It in More Than Valentine’s Red

Red makes perfect sense for Valentine’s Day, but I actually think this pattern becomes even more useful when you stop thinking of it purely as a Valentine project.

Try:

• Soft blush pink for a romantic spring scarf
• Cream or ivory for something a little more elegant
• Black for an easy evening accessory
• Jewel-toned purple or emerald
• A self-striping yarn for more colour without extra work
• Red and pink worked in contrasting sections
• Soft grey with a pink edge

One CraftBits reader even commented that she planned to experiment with colour changes to make the heart-like details stand out more.

That’s exactly the sort of simple modification I love because you can completely change the finished look without having to learn another technique.

A Good Last-Minute Handmade Valentine Gift

What I particularly like about this pattern is that it feels like a proper handmade gift without requiring a huge yarn investment.

Add it to a small Valentine’s gift bag with chocolates, hand cream or a handmade card and you suddenly have something much more personal than another bunch of supermarket flowers.

If you’re buying yarn especially for it, a soft worsted-weight yarn from Mary Maxim would work nicely, and this is also the sort of project where having a comfortable ergonomic crochet hook makes those long foundation chains much less tedious.

Swap the colour and suddenly this becomes a lightweight scarf you could make for birthdays, Mother’s Day, teacher gifts or even craft stalls.

It would also make a lovely beginner project for someone who already knows chains, single crochet and double crochet but wants to practise working into chain spaces and making V-stitches.
