Back
Starting at bottom, with 2 strands of light color cast on 14 sts.
*With 2 strands of dark color cast on 6 sts, with 2 strands of light color cast on 24 sts. Repeat from * once more.
Then with dark color cast on 6 sts and light color cast on 14 sts — 94 sts in all.
Work in stockinette stitch (K 1 row, P 1 row), keeping colors aligned (light over light, dark over dark). Twist yarns neatly at the color joins to prevent holes.
Work straight until piece measures 4 inches.
Decrease 1 st at both ends of next row and continue in pattern until piece measures 7 inches.
Break yarn, leaving 4″ tails to fasten on wrong side.
Attach 2 strands of dark color and work across entire row for 1¾ inches (10 rows) to form a horizontal stripe.
These 8¾ inches constitute one pattern repeat.
Repeat this section, decreasing 1 st at both ends of one row every 4 inches until 80 sts remain.
Work straight until piece measures 28½ inches.
Armhole Shaping
Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows.
Then decrease 1 st at each end of every row until 62 sts remain.
Work straight until armhole measures 8 inches.
Shoulder Shaping
Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each row until 18 sts remain.
Bind off remaining sts.
Right Front
Starting at bottom:
With light color, cast on 19 sts (side edge), then
dark color 6 sts, light color 24 sts, dark color 8 sts (front edge) — 57 sts total.
Work in same block pattern as for back, keeping 8 sts at front edge in moss stitch:
Row 1: K1, P1 across 8 sts
Row 2: P over K and K over P
Decrease 1 st at side edge every 2½ inches, 4 times.
Then decrease 1 st every 3 inches, 6 times — 47 sts remain.
Work straight until piece measures 28½ inches.
Armhole Shaping
Bind off 5 sts once, 2 sts every other row 3 times, then
decrease 1 st every 4th row 4 times — 32 sts remain.
Work straight until 7 inches from armhole shaping.
Neck & Shoulder Shaping
From front edge, bind off 8 sts (start neck).
Then decrease 1 st every other row to shoulder.
When armhole depth is 8 inches, bind off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are gone.
Left Front
Work as for Right Front, reversing all shaping.
Sleeves (Epaulettes)
Starting at top, with light color cast on 20 sts.
Work straight in stockinette for 5 inches.
Then cast on 2 sts at end of next 2 rows (24 sts).
Attach dark color and:
K1 dark, K22 light, K1 dark — starting 2 vertical stripes.
Continue in pattern, increasing 1 st at end of each row until 68 sts on needle.
When light block measures 7 inches, add a dark horizontal stripe (as before).
Cast on 3 sts at end of next 2 rows (74 sts).
Work 8 rows straight.
Then decrease 1 st at both ends of next row and every 8th row after until 54 sts remain.
Work straight until sleeve measures 17 inches.
Bind off.
Pockets
With dark color, cast on 32 sts.
Work in moss stitch for 7 inches.
Bind off.
Collar
With light color, cast on 64 sts.
Work in moss stitch for 1¾ inches.
Next row: Work 7 sts light, 50 sts dark, 7 sts light.
Continue in moss stitch across entire row, keeping 7 sts at each end in light color until collar measures 4½ inches.
Bind off.
Finishing
Sew side and shoulder seams.
Sew sleeve seams and insert sleeves.
Make two 1¼-inch darts at each side of epaulette for saddle shoulders.
Sew epaulette over shoulder seam with square finish.
Make ¾-inch hems along lower edge and sleeves.
Attach collar to neck edge, extending fronts 1 inch beyond collar edges.
Sew on pockets as illustrated.
Fasten neckline with 2 snap fasteners.
Shoulder Padding (Optional)
Cut two buckram pieces:
Top edge: 4½ inches
Bottom edge: 3½ inches
Sides: 4 inches
Cover with lining and stitch for firmness.
Make matching padded covers filled with cotton batting, then sew onto buckram along edges.
Attach each shoulder pad 1 inch in from neck edge, aligning the 3½-inch edge toward the outer shoulder.
