Just knit firmly enough that stuffing will not show through too much.
Abbreviations
- k = knit
- p = purl
- kfb = knit into front and back of stitch
- k2tog = knit 2 together
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
Body Pattern
This chicken starts as a simple textured square.
Cast on 24 stitches.
Row 1 (RS)
Knit.
Row 2 (WS)
Purl.
Row 3
K1, *p1, k1; repeat from * to end.
Row 4
K1, *p1, k1; repeat from * to end.
Repeat these 4 rows until your piece measures about 4 inches square.
Cast off.
You should now have a small textured square.
Making Up the Chicken
Step 1
Fold the square diagonally into a triangle, with the texture showing on the outside.
Step 2
Sew one side seam from the point up toward the top, then sew the second side seam, leaving a small opening for stuffing.
Step 3
Add a little toy stuffing.
Do not overstuff. These look cutest when softly plump.
Step 4
Sew the opening closed.
Now shape the chicken gently with your hands so one corner becomes the tail end and the opposite stuffed point becomes the face end.
Beak
Using yellow yarn:
- Make a tiny stitched beak by working a few small horizontal stitches at the front point.
- Wrap the yarn 2 or 3 times to build a small raised triangle shape.
Fasten securely.
Comb
Using red yarn:
- Work 3 small looped stitches along the top of the head.
- You can do this with lazy-daisy style embroidery loops or tiny chained loops sewn in place.
This gives that sweet little chicken comb look.
Eyes
Add one eye to each side using:
- French knots, or
- black embroidery stitches, or
- tiny beads sewn securely
Optional Tail Shaping
To make the tail point stand out more, pinch the back corner slightly and add one small stitch underneath to hold the shape.
Color Ideas
These are lovely in:
- warm brown
- soft white
- light grey
- speckled tweed yarn
- cream with a red comb
- mixed hen colors in a little trio
Quick Version for Market Makes
If you want to make a batch:
- knit several squares first
- seam all the bodies
- stuff them assembly-line style
- then add beaks, combs, and eyes at the end
That is much faster than finishing one at a time.
Handy Tips
If your chicken looks too flat, use a little more stuffing.
If it looks too round, use less stuffing and pull the seams a bit tighter.
Fuzzy or halo yarn gives a softer, more pocket-plush finish, while smooth yarn makes the stitch texture stand out more clearly.
Gift Tag Idea
These are extra cute with a little tag that says:
Emotional Support Chicken
For stressful days, carry one everywhere.

Mine has turned out too “pointy” at both ends. Doesn’t resemble the picture. Is there a video? How do I eliminate the points so it looks as cute as the picture?
Looks great. Now I have to see if I can print the instructions.
Love it!
