There’s something magical about collecting leaves and turning them into art. Kids love the adventure of foraging for shapes and textures, and you’ll love that this is budget-friendly, sustainable, and screen-free

What you need
- Plain cotton tote bag (pre-washed)
- A selection of fresh leaves (different shapes and sizes)
- Fabric paints (autumn colours like burnt orange, mustard, deep red, and green work beautifully)
- Small paintbrush or sponge brush
- Scrap cardboard or paper (to place inside bag while painting)
Old clothes or apron (it gets messy in the best way)
Instructions
1. Go Leaf Hunting
Head outside for a little leaf treasure hunt. Look for leaves with interesting veins and edges – maple, oak, and fern leaves work beautifully. Try to choose ones that are fresh and pliable so they hold paint well.
2. Prepare Your Workspace
Lay down newspaper or a wipeable tablecloth. Slip a piece of cardboard inside your tote bag to prevent paint bleeding through to the other side.
3. Paint the Leaves
Using your paintbrush or sponge, dab fabric paint onto the textured side of the leaf (the side with the most visible veins). You don’t want it dripping – a light, even coat works best.
4. Stamp the Bag
Flip the painted leaf over and press it gently but firmly onto the tote bag. Use your hands to smooth it down so the paint transfers evenly. Carefully lift it away to reveal your print.
5. Layer & Repeat
Play with overlapping leaves, mixing colours, and varying directions. For a bolder look, outline some leaves with a fine paintbrush once they’re dry.
6. Set the Paint
Follow your fabric paint instructions for heat-setting. This usually involves ironing the reverse side of the bag or using a hot dryer to make the design permanent.
Crafting Tips
- Mix Colours on the Leaf – Dab two or three colours onto one leaf for a blended, autumnal effect.
- Use Metallics – Bronze or gold paint adds a touch of glamour.
- Make a Matching Set – Print on aprons, tea towels, or pillowcases for coordinated home décor.
How to Make This a Group Activity
This project is brilliant for classrooms, nature clubs, or birthday parties. Set up a leaf printing station with paint pots, sponges, and leaves so kids can rotate and try different shapes.
Care Instructions
Hand wash your bag in cold water or gentle cycle to keep the prints vibrant. Avoid harsh detergents.
One of the best parts of this craft is that it changes with the seasons. Spring brings delicate fresh greens, summer gives you lush leaves, and autumn brings all those rich, warm tones that make this project pop.
