Breathe Easy: DIY Natural Vapor Rub (Vicks-Style) with Essential Oils

Breathe Easy: DIY Natural Vapor Rub (Vicks-Style) with Essential Oils

Oh, the joys of cold and flu season—said no one ever. If your household is anything like mine, the sniffles and coughs seem to show up uninvited and hang around just long enough to ruin everyone’s sleep. But instead of reaching for petroleum-based balms, I like to whip up my own natural vapor rub using gentle ingredients I can actually pronounce.
This homemade Vicks-style rub is soothing, safe, and smells like a spa day in a jar. Eucalyptus and peppermint work to clear nasal passages, while coconut oil and shea butter soften skin and deliver those powerful plant oils right where you need them. Plus, no artificial fragrances or weird additives.
Perfect for little ones (with a milder version) or us mums who just need a moment of calm between coughing fits.

What you need

1/2 cup coconut oil

2 tbsp shea butter (optional for a creamier texture)

2 tbsp beeswax pellets (for firmness)

15 drops eucalyptus essential oil

10 drops peppermint essential oil

5 drops lavender essential oil (optional for calming effect)

Small glass jar with lid

Small saucepan or double boiler

Metal or heat-safe spoon

Labels if gifting or storing

Instructions

Step 1 – Melt the Base
In a double boiler or small saucepan over low heat, combine the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets. Stir occasionally until fully melted and smooth.

Step 2 – Cool Slightly
Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly—but don’t let it solidify yet. You want it warm enough to mix easily, but not hot enough to damage the essential oils.

Step 3 – Add Essential Oils
Add in your eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender oils. Stir well to distribute them evenly throughout the balm.

Step 4 – Pour into Jar
Carefully pour the mixture into your clean jar. Let it sit at room temperature until completely cooled and solidified.

Step 5 – Label and Store
Add a handwritten or printed label and store in a cool, dry place. Shelf life is about 6 months.

How to Use:

  • Apply a small amount to chest, back, neck, or even the soles of feet before bedtime.
  • Use for adults and older children as-is.
  • For toddlers under 2, cut essential oils in half or check with your pediatrician.
  • Not for internal use—avoid eyes and broken skin.

Why Make Your Own Vapor Rub?

  • No petroleum or synthetic chemicals
  • Budget-friendly and only takes 15 minutes to make
  • Customizable to your scent preferences
  • Makes a lovely handmade gift or addition to a winter care package
