Gauge
Gauge is not crucial for this crochet coaster. If you want a larger coaster, you can add another increase round before working the loop edging.
Instructions
This sweet little crochet coaster is one of those quick projects that feels far more impressive than the effort involved. It works up in about 10 minutes once you get going, uses a small amount of cotton yarn, and has a pretty looped edge that makes it look like a tiny crochet flower or mini doily.
It is a great beginner crochet coaster pattern, especially if you are comfortable making double crochet stitches and working in the round. Make a stack of them for gifts, craft fairs, teacher presents, housewarming baskets, or just to use up those leftover bits of cotton yarn hiding in the bottom of your stash basket.
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US crochet terms.
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
mc = magic circle
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch
sts = stitches
fo = fasten off
Pattern Notes
The beginning ch 2 counts as the first dc in each round.
Join each round with a slip stitch into the top of the beginning ch 2.
Stitch counts are shown in brackets at the end of each round.
You can begin with a magic circle for a neater centre, or chain 3 and join to form a ring if you prefer.
The final round creates the decorative scalloped loop edging.

Ch 5, skip the next st, sl st into the next st.
Repeat from * to * around.
Join neatly into the base of the first ch-5 loop if needed.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for weaving in.
[15 loops]
Finishing
Use a tapestry needle to weave in all ends on the wrong side of the coaster.
For a neater finish, gently block the coaster by pinning the loops evenly into shape and lightly misting with water. Let it dry flat.
And that is it — one easy crochet coaster finished before the kettle has even properly boiled.
Helpful Tips
Cotton yarn is the best choice for crochet coasters because it absorbs moisture and holds its shape better than acrylic.
For a sturdier coaster, use a slightly smaller hook than the yarn label suggests.
If your coaster curls, your tension may be a little tight. Try blocking it, or go up half a hook size.
If your coaster waves, your tension may be loose, or you may have added too many stitches in the increase rounds.
Make several in different colours and tie them with a ribbon for a quick handmade gift. They are especially lovely as hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, or craft stall fillers.
