Pattern Notes
This poncho is shaped by increasing at the beginning of each row until you have 50 stitches. The neck opening is then created by working one side separately for a few rows, then the other side, before joining the stitches back together. After the neck opening is complete, the poncho is decreased at the beginning of each row until only 1 stitch remains.
Instructions
This pattern has a matching hat.
This Baby Twizzler Poncho free knitting pattern is a sweet and simple baby project worked in cosy garter stitch. Designed for approximately 9–12 months, this easy knitted baby poncho uses soft fashion yarn for a fluffy, textured finish that looks adorable on little ones and makes a lovely handmade baby gift.
The pattern starts with just one stitch and increases to create the poncho shape, then forms a front neck opening before decreasing back down. It is a cute project for baby showers, winter layering, photo props, or handmade baby wardrobes. Pair it with the matching Baby Twizzler Hat for a complete knitted baby outfit.
Poncho Pattern
Increase Section
Cast on 1 stitch.
Row 1: Kfb.
You now have 2 sts.
Row 2: Kfb, knit to end of row.
You now have 3 sts.
Continue in this way, increasing in the first stitch of every row:
Next row: Kfb, knit to end.
Repeat this row until you have 50 stitches on your needle.
You have now completed the first half of the poncho shape.
Create the Front Neck Opening
The next section creates the split at the front neck.
Next row: Knit 32 stitches, then turn your work.
You will now work only across these 32 stitches for the first side of the neck opening. Leave the remaining 18 stitches sitting on the needle unworked.
First Side of Neck Opening
Work in garter stitch over these 32 stitches for 8 rows, without increasing or decreasing.
That means:
Rows 1–8: Knit across the 32 sts.
After completing the 8 rows, push these 32 stitches carefully to the end of the needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in later.
Second Side of Neck Opening
Rejoin your yarn to the remaining 18 stitches.
Work in garter stitch for 4 rows over these 18 stitches.
Rows 1–4: Knit across the 18 sts.
Now the two sides of the front neck opening are ready to be joined again.
Join the Poncho Back Together
On the next row, knit across the 18 stitches, then continue knitting across the 32 stitches that were resting on the needle.
You should now have 50 stitches together on your needle again.
The neck opening is complete.
Decrease Section
You will now shape the second point of the poncho by decreasing at the beginning of every row.
Next row: K2tog, knit to end of row.
You now have 49 sts.
Repeat this row:
Next row: K2tog, knit to end.
Continue decreasing in the first stitch of every row until only 1 stitch remains.
Bind off the final stitch and fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in all yarn ends neatly using a yarn needle.
Gently block the poncho if needed. Because this is garter stitch, it may stretch a little, so don’t over-block it. A light steam or gentle damp block is usually enough.
You may also add a small button, ribbon tie, crochet edging, or pom-poms to the front if you want to dress it up a bit. Just make sure any embellishments are securely attached, especially if the poncho is for a baby.
