sewing Blocks together.
Make four of these Small Blocks and sew together to form a Large Block. The Cluster Corners form the center design of Large Block, while the Filet Corners form the corners. Tack the other corners of Small Blocks together by the p at tip of ends of Oval.
Make 80 Large Blocks.
On tissue paper, draw a true square about an inch larger than finished Block. Stretch and pin Block right-side-down on this pattern on a padded ironing board and steam with a wet cloth and hot iron, then press through a dry cloth until perfectly dry. A Spread pressed in
this way will keep its shape and flatness indefinitely.
BORDER – With Yellow, (ch 3, 3 dc in 1st st, ch 2, 1 sl st in same 1st st) 4 times, 1 sl st at base of 1st petal, ch 3, remove hook. Let this

same st, (ch 3, 3 dc in 1st st of 3-ch, ch 2, 1 sl st in same st) twice, sk last 3 petals, 1 sl st in next ch st connecting Flowers, ch 2, 1 dc in
same st, sk 2 sts of connecting ch between Flowers, 1 sl st in next.
Now pass previous Flower over working thread, and make 1 dc in same st with last dc. This dc will be on left side of connecting ch. Ch
2, 1 sl st in same st with dc, ch 6, remove hook. Let this ch lie across back of Flower to opposite side. Insert hook in top of 2d petal, catch
loop and pull through, which brings thread in proper place to continue work. Repeat from * until a length of Flowers long enough to go
across 1 side of Spread is made, allowing exactly 15 Flowers across each Block.
Now make another Flower.
After 4th Petal, ch 5, remove hook, insert in top of next-to-last petal, catch loop and pull through. This forms corner Flower. Repeat from * around Spread, joining end Flowers.
Heading Row Around Inside of Border – Join Cream to side petal of 1 Flower, * (ch 8, 1 sc in side petal of next Flower) repeated to Flower next corner Flower. Ch 2, 1 tr between petals of corner Flower, ch 2, 1 sc in side petal of next Flower. Repeat from * around
Spread. Fasten off.
Edge – Repeat last row on opposite side of Flower Row, except at corners make 8-ch, 1 sc in 1 st petal of corner Flower, ch 11, 1 sc in next petal, ch 8, 1 sc in next Flower. Fasten off.
2nd Row – Join Cream to sc in 1st Flower preceding 1 corner Flower, ch 1, ** 4 sc over next 8-ch, (ch 5, 1 sc in 1st st of 5-ch to form a p) 4 times, 1 sl st at base of 3d p from hook, ch 5, 1 sc in 1st st for a p, 1 sl st at base of next p, 4 sc over balance of 8-ch, 1 sc in next sc, 4 sc over corner 11-ch, (ch 5, 1 sc in 1st st for a p) 6 times, 1 sl st at base of 3d p from hook, (ch 5, 1 sc in 1st st for a p, 1 sl st at base of next p) 3 times, 3 sc over 11-ch. Now make another p-loop just like last one. Then 4 sc over balance of 11-ch, 1 sc in sc, * 4 sc over next 8- ch. Now make a p-loop with 2 ps up each side and 1 at tip. 4 sc over balance of 8-ch, 1 sc in sc, 4 sc over next 8-ch. Make a p-loop with 4 ps up each side and 1 at tip. 4 sc over balance of 8-ch, 1 sc in sc, (4 sc over next 8-ch. Make a p-loop with 6 ps up each side and 1 at tip, 4 sc over balance of 8-ch, 1 sc in sc) twice, 4 sc over next 8-ch. Make a p-loop with 4 ps up each side and 1 at tip, 4 sc over balance of 8- ch, I sc in sc. Repeat from * across to corner. Repeat from ** around Spread. Fasten off.
3rd Row – Join to tip of 1st p-loop of last row, * ch 11, 1 sc in tip of next p-loop, ch 1 3, 1 sc in tip of next, ch 11, 1 sc in tip of next, (ch 9,
I sc in next loop) repeated to next corner. Repeat from * around Spread.
4th Row – * (6 sc, a 4-ch p, and 6 sc) over next 11-ch, 1 sc in sc, (7 sc, p, 7 sc) over corner 13-ch, 1 sc in sc, (6 sc, p, 6 sc) over next 11- ch, 1 sc in sc, (5 sc, p, 5 sc) over each 9-ch loop to next corner. Repeat from * around Spread. Fasten off.
Press Border and sew chs of Heading Row to edge of Blocks.
All done!
The pattern is incompréhensible to me from the get-go because the large flower has but three petals. The two small flowers have 4 petals each. How does one sew them together in a line with the large flower between the small ones? The instructions that proceed from there seem possible only if the large flower has 4 petals. The photo is not helpfulin this regard.
Does anyone know how long this project takes to complete?
I have only been crocheting for the past couple of years. I started because I love the look of lace and doilies. But I don’t understand the pattern for the small block. It says chain 7 making 1 st st twice the usual size. I don’t understand what to fo after the chain 7. Can someone please help me and explain it to me. My nephew is getting married next September and this us something that I would love to make for him because he admires all of my work. He loves to crochet himself. Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi Joni, I don’t know the answer to your question, but could you tell me how much thread you bought and was it size 10. I’ve been wanting to make the same bedspread as you but no one could answer that question. I would truly appreciate any help. Maybe that st st was a misprint good luck
Thanks, for responding. I haven’t bought any yarn yet, but have been trying it out on thread that I already have. It a recent post Gabrielle says that she bought from Herschners 4 cones of off white and 2 of yellow ansd she said it was enough for a full size and had leftover. Hope that helped and good luck on the project.
Joni thank you so much! I have been waiting for this answer since before Christmas. It is truly appreciateed.
Sincerely,
Patty
Your welcome, I was glad that the info helped you.
I totally lost on this pattern. Very confusing. I need a tutorial
How many balls of thread for this pattern?
Unfortunately this is a Vintage pattern The amount of balls required were not provided.
O M G THIS IS SO PRETTY CANT WAIT TO GET START ON THIS THANK YOU
Does anyone know how many balls of thread this project takes?
I ordered cones of #10 thread from Herschnerr’s. I bought 4 cones of off-white and 2 of yellow. Each one was 2,400 yds. I made one for a full size bed and could have made more squares and made a Queen I think. Had plenty for the Full/Double. Will probably use the rest to make small crib blankets for charity. Yes, it takes time to make, but anything worth doing like this isn’t going to be made in a day. One way to make it go faster is to get a friend or a group to help work on it. I teach young people to crochet and knit. We made it as a group and it went a lot faster. We finished in about 3 months. There were about 10 of us working on it. I used my ball winder and wound the cones into 400 yd balls. I slipped a dowel into each wound ball and attached each one to a toilet paper holder that had been attached to a small piece of board. You can buy ball holders that are nothing more than that but they are expensive. Just buy a board, have a friend with a saw cut it in pieces for you…they can sand it and stain it if you want…then buy a cheap toilet paper holder and have your handy friend attach it to the board. Then, when you wind the balls, put the roll holder in the center of the ball as you take it off the ball winder and put it on the tissue holder. BINGO!! Rolls off without a problem, keeps the ball clean and untangled. You can make a lot with one pine board and some cheap toilet tissue holders, or get fancy with prettier toilet tissue holders. Still cheaper than the ones they sell with the little drawers on them. If you have a handy friend who does woodworking they can make them like that cheaper for you….WITH the little drawers!
I am a fairly new at crocheting, and love a challenge, but I am having a problem with the pattern. I don’t know how to start with the small block. My pattern says to chain 7, make 1 st st twice the size. It would be great, since you already made this if you could explain how to get started. Do you think a year is plenty of time for this projrct, working a couple of hours a day?My nephew is getting married next September and would like to give him this as a gift. Thanks.
Hi joni, I am currently working my way though this pattern, and since it is a vintage pattern, the way it is written is at times unclear. However, the answer to your question is that the first stich (1st, st ) is twice the normal size. Hope you can get it finished in time.
Thanks!!! That is what I thought it was but I am still not sure of myself. I am going to give it a go and hope I finish in time. Thanks for taking the time to reply, I greatly appreciate it.
beautiful… I stumbled accross this.. and am hooked!
gorgeous-can’t wait to make it
there is a better and easier way to show a pattern ,or call it a plan, of a crochet work. it uses loops and bars as symbol to represent the pattern. its much more simpler
I just can’t seem to understand this pattern. finally figured out large and small patterns, but I am now stuck on row 3. Help? Is there a re write of this pattern anywhere?
large and small flowers that is
I’m having problems with the cluster corners. Has anyone made this yet? If so, is there a re-write for this pattern anywhere? I would love to make one for my sons upcoming wedding.
