Recycled Cheese Grater Owl – Sustainable Crafts

Recycled Cheese Grater Owl – Sustainable Crafts

I’ve been hanging onto an old box grater for ages—too rusty to use, too cool to toss. You know how it is. And then inspiration struck while staring into the recycling bin (don’t judge me—it’s a hotbed of crafty potential). Say hello to this charming little cheese grater owl, made entirely from junk drawer treasures and bits from the kitchen!

It’s whimsical, a bit quirky, and oh-so satisfying to put together. Plus, it gives new life to things you might already have at home. The best part? No fancy tools needed.

What you need

1 old box-style cheese grater (flat sided works best)

2 metal jar lids (standard mason jar size for the big owl eyes)

2 plastic or metal bottle caps (for eye centers)

2 small screws and a screwdriver or hot glue gun

1 wooden peg, cork, or wine stopper (for the beak)

1 sturdy stick or tree branch (about 10–12 inches long)

4 copper or craft wires (or twist ties)

Optional: metal-friendly glue or epoxy if avoiding screws

Instructions

Step 1: Clean & Prep

Give your cheese grater a good wash. If it’s rusted, a quick scrub with steel wool works wonders. Dry it well.

Step 2: Build the Owl Eyes

Place the two mason jar lids side by side near the top of the grater. Layer each bottle cap inside the lids and either screw or glue them into place. These become the owl’s wide, surprised eyes.

Tip: For a more secure hold, use small screws with washers through the center of each bottle cap.

Step 3: Add a Beak

Hot glue or screw the wooden peg (or cork) just under the eyes in the center. Make sure it points downward like a beak. A slightly angled placement gives your owl more personality.

Step 4: Give It Some Feet

Position your stick at the bottom front edge of the grater. Wrap two pieces of wire on each side of the grater holes to “perch” the owl onto the stick. Twist to secure tightly—this part gives the whole project that sweet “sitting owl” feel.

Step 5: Hang & Display

Use the grater handle to hang your owl on a hook, nail, or garden fence. Indoors or out, this fellow adds rustic charm to your decor. Bonus points if you give him a name (mine’s Fergus).
