Frog Pond Infant Hat

Frog Pond Infant Hat

Imagine a placid lake at sunset, lily pads floating on the surface. Specs of light flicker across the water and fading sunlight catch a drop on a petal. That's what I envision while knitting this hat.

What you need

1 skein of Filatura Lanarota Rainbow in Soft Lilac
Less than 1 skein of Filatura Lanarota Rainbow in Natural
Less than 1 skein of Filatura Lanarota Rainbow in Soft Green
#7 needles (straight or circular)
6 Yellow Glass beads
6 White sequins
Thread
Tapestry needle
Sewing needle small enough to slip through hole in beads

Instructions

I’ve worked it from the top down but the chart allows you to easily reverse the directions to work bottom up or in the round from either direction. One note, though, if you work it in the round, don’t forget to remove the extra selvage stitch on each end of the pattern.

Based on the flowers in Nicky Epstein’s book:

Nicky Epstein’s Knitted Embellishments: 350 Appliques, Borders, Cords and More!

With green yarn:

CO 3 stitch.

Working in Garter St, Inc in first stitch of every row until you have 10 stitches total.

Snip yarn and repeat 4 more times, but don’t cut yarn on last leaf.

Place all five petals on a single needle and knit across all stitches.

Work 3 more rows of Garter

*K2tog across entire row* x2

Cut yarn and draw through all remaining stitches.

With white yarn:

CO 5 stitches

Inc at beginning of every row to 9 stitches

Snip yarn and repeat 4 more times, but don’t cut yarn on last petal.

Place all five petals on a single needle and knit across all stitches.

*K2tog across entire row* x2

Cut yarn and draw through all remaining stitches.

Finishing

Sew up back seam of hat

Sew in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Attach white flower to green leaves

With needle and thread, knot end of thread and draw through back of flower, at center. Thread on one sequin and one yellow bead. Bring thread back through sequin hole and back through flower.

Repeat process with the other five beads/sequins attaching them in a circle around center bead. Please refer to images for reference.

Attach flower to hat VERY SECURELY. The flower is fairly heavy, so err on the side of caution and really get that sucker well secured.
