Knitted Penguin Pattern

This knitting pattern shows you how to knit a 9 inch penguin.

What you need

Size 6 US (8 UK) (4 mm) needles
1-50 g ball of black Double worsted (8 ply)
1-50 g ball of white Double worsted (8 ply)
Small amount of orange/ white/ black felt
Toy Filling/Wadding

Instructions

The Pattern

(Back)

With black yarn cast on 7 stitches.

Working in stocking stitch.

Inc at the end of the next 12 rows, ending with a purl row.      (19 stitches)

Break off yarn and leave the stitches on a stitch holder.

Now repeat

Cast on 7 stitches

Inc at the end of the next 12 rows ending with a purl row.     (19 stitches)

Next knit across theses stitches then across the stitches from the holder (38 stitches)

On theses 38 stitches stocking stitch 11rows

Now dec one stitch at each end of the next and every 6th row until you have 22 stitches.

Now work 5 rows without shaping.

Next row knit 9 (knit 2 together)twice knit 9. (20 stitches)

Next row purl 8 (purl 2 together) twice,purl 8 (18 stitches)

Next row knit 7 (knit 2 together) twice, knit 7 (16 stitches)

Next row purl 6 (purl 2 together) twice purl 6 (14 stitches)

Knit one row

Purl one row

Cast off.

(Front)

With white cast on 7 stitches begin at the base.

Working in Stocking stitch for 12 rows Inc into the last stitch of every row.(19 stitches)

Break off the yarn and leave these stitches on a stitch holder.

Make a second front the same, stop after 12 rows

now. Knit across the the stitches and the stitches from the needle holder.( 38 stitches)

Work 3 rows across both pieces

Now dec one stitch at each end of the next. And every 6th row until you have (16 stitches)

Head-Change to black yarn (one side)

Purl 8 turn and leave the remaining stitches on a holder,

Inc one stitch at the beginning of the next row and at the same edge on the following 5 rows (14 stitches)

Work 7 rows ( stocking stitch)

Dec 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row, and the same edge on the following 7 rows  (6 stitches).

Work 1 row then cast off.

Rejoin your yarn to the remaining stitches and work your second side to match the first

Wings ( make 2) in black and 2 in white.

Using black yarn cast on 8 stitches.

Stocking stitch 6 rows increasing at each end of the next (10 stitches)

Stocking stitch 5 rows increasing at each end of the next row (12 stitches) work 9 rows stocking stitch.

Now decrease 1 stitch at each end of the next and every following 3rd row until  you have only 4 stitches left

Work 1 row (then cast off ).

Make up –

Sew the seam at the top of the head, and down the side seams.

Stuff your penguin nice and firm then sew the base seam.

Sew the wing pieces together (white on the inside)

Sew your wings in place.

Cut out your felt pieces from the pattern provided

Cut two beak pieces stuff slightly and stitch them together.

Cut two feet pieces and stitch them together

Cut two large and two small eye pieces.

Glue or stitch into place

      Perhaps you could say how the head goes to the back portion, have granddaughter down from wales, now stitching it up re – knitted that pointy bit top of front still not right – can you help please? regards Maureen.
