Charity Crochet Pattern: Vintage Baby Bunting Cocoon

This vintage crochet pattern shows you how to make a traditional style bunting otherwise known as baby cocoons.

What you need

Fleisher’s Deluxe Zephyr Germantown,
15 balls for Bunting.
White crochet Hook, Size 4.
Gauge: 3 Stars = 1 inch
4 rows = 1 inch

Instructions

Ch 225 Sts.

First Row [right side]-Slip first st from hook, draw up a loop in each of next 4 Sts, yo and through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 [1 full star st], * draw up 1 loop in ch 1 [eye of star just made], 1 loop in back thread of last loop of same star, 1 loop in each of next 2 Sts, yo and through all 5 loops, ch 1 *; repeat between *?s to end [111 stars].

2nd Row-Ch 1, turn, work 2 sc in eye of each star, 1 sc in turning ch [223 sc].

3rd Row-Ch 3, turn, skip first st from hook, draw up a loop in each of next 2 ch Sts, skip first sc, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yo and through all 5 loops, ch 1; repeat between *?s of first Row to end [111 stars].

Repeat last 2 Rows until 26 ins. from beginning, end with star st Row.

Fasten off.

Border 

Working from right side, join yarn at corner in last st of foundation ch, work sc on side edge, working 5 sc on edge of every 4 Rows [2 sc and 2 star Rows], 3 sc at corner, 2 sc in eye of every star across top, 3 sc at corner, continue down other side edge to correspond to first side, having a multiple of 3 plus 1 sc. Fasten off.

2nd Row: Working from same side as last Row, 1 slip st in first sc of last Row, * ch 3, 1 dc in same st as slip st, skip 2 sc, 1 slip st in next sc; repeat from * to corner, across top and down other side edge. Fasten off.

Lap first 6 stars of first Row over last 6 stars of first Row; working from right side, work a Row of sc on foundation ch, working through 2 thicknesses, work 2 sc in center of each of 6 overlapped stars, then working through single thickness, * 2 sc in center of each of next 3 stars, 1 sc in center of next star; repeat from * 21 times, 2 sc in each of last 11 stars [188 sc], join. Fasten off.

End Piece -Ch 25 Sts, 6 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 22 Sts, 6 sc in last st, slip st in same st.

2nd Row-Ch 2, turn, draw up a loop in 2nd st from hook, draw up a loop in slip st, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yo and through 5 loops, ch 1, continue star st to end of sc Row, then along other side of foundation ch, to within 2 Sts of end, work last star as follows, draw up 4 loops as usual, yo and through 5 loops, do not ch 1, join with a slip st in top of ch 2 at beginning of Row [28 stars].

3rd Row-Ch 1, turn, * 2 sc in eye of each of 11 stars, 5 sc in next eye, 4 sc in next eye, 5 sc in next eye; repeat from * once, join in first sc [72 sc].

4th Row-Ch 2, turn, work stars as on first Row, join [36 stars].

5th Row-Ch 1, turn, * 2 sc in eye of each of 13 stars, 4 sc in each of next 5 eyes; repeat from * once, join [92 sc].

6th Row-Ch 2, turn, work star st Row as before [46 stars].

7th Row-Ch 1, turn, * 2 sc in eye of each of 13 stars, 3 sc in each of next 4 eyes, 2 sc in each of next 2 eyes, 3 sc in each of next 4 eyes; repeat from * once, join [108 sc].

8th Row-Ch 2, turn, work star Row as before [54 stars].

9th Row-Ch 1, turn, * 2 sc in each of 13 eyes, 3 sc in each of 2 eyes, 4 sc in each of 2 eyes, 3 sc in each of 2 eyes, 4 sc in each of 2 eyes, 3 sc in each of 2 eyes; repeat from * once, join [140 sc].

10th Row-Ch 2, turn, work star Row [70 stars].

11th Row-Ch 1, turn, * 2 sc in each of 13 eyes, 3 sc in each of 6 eyes, 2 sc in each of 10 eyes, 3 sc in each of 6 eyes; repeat from * once, join [164 sc].

12th Row-Ch 2, turn, work star Row [82 stars].

13th Row-2 sc in each of 15 eyes, 3 sc in each of 6 eyes, 2 sc in each of 12 eyes, 3 sc in each of 6 eyes, 2 sc in each of 17 eyes, 3 sc in each of 6 eyes, 2 sc in each of 12 eyes, 3 sc in each of 6 eyes, 2 sc in each of 2 eyes, join [188 sc].

14th Row-Work star st Row [94 stars].

15th Row-2 sc in each eye.

16th Row-Work star Row.

17th Row-Ch 1, do not turn, 2 sc in each eye, join [188 sc]. Fasten off.

Buttonhole Band

First Row-Ch 101 Sts, work 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each st on ch [100 sc, 20 ins.].

2nd Row-Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st. Repeat 2nd Row once.

Buttonhole Row – Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 2 Sts, * ch 3, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in each of 13 Sts; repeat from * 5 times, end last repeat 1 sc in each of 15 Sts. Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc and ch st. Work 3 Rows sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Pin buttonhole band under overlap from lower edge to within about 7  ins. of top, having inner edge of band on a line with 4th star from edge of overlap. Sew inner edge and top and bottom edges to overlap. Tack free edge to overlap at center of space between buttonholes.

Sew end piece to bottom of bunting. Sew on buttons.

  1. SIZE 4 HOOK??!!! This project would take you FOREVER! By the time you’d finish this you would NOT want to just give it away. 2-stars for functional project, but baaaaaad idea for “charity crochet” project… Sorry, but by the time you finished this, you could have at least 10 premiee baby caps made.
