Yarn And Felt Wreath

Yarn And Felt Wreath

A nice, warm, welcoming wreath on your front door, or over your fireplace, is an excellent way to add warm and festive decor to your home this Christmas. I love the softness of a yarn wrap wreath.

What you need

Hay wreath
1/2 yard of white felt
7 oz skein of white yarn
1/4 yard of red, green and grey felt.
3 stemmed wreath picks
pearl head pins and pearl like beads.

Instructions

Before you start constructing your wreath remove the plastic wrap from the hay wreath. You are going to be working with hot glue that would only melt the plastic and create a mess.

Cut four selvage-to-selvage strips of white felt or fleece that are 3″ wide. The strips don’t have to be perfectly straight or even. They are only used to add bulk to the wreath, and will be covered by the yarn.

Hot glue one end of one of the strips to the back of the wreath. Wrap the length of the strip around the wreath overlapping the wraps a little to ensure the hay of the wreath doesn’t become exposed. You should be able to cover roughly a quarter of the wreath with the strip. Glue the other end of the strip to the wreath once the whole length of it is wrapped. Wrap a second strip around the wreath starting where the last one left off. Keep wrapping the strips until the whole wreath is covered. You may need to cut another strip to make it all the way around the wreath.

Next, you want to wrap the wreath with the yarn. Glue the end of the yarn down to the back of the wreath. Wrap the wreath with the yarn like you did with the fabric. Don’t worry about making each wrap of yarn line up perfectly with the previous wrap. You want the yarn to kind of go every which way, overlap, cross back and forth while also gradually making its way around the wreath. This ensured the fabric gets covered, adds a little more bulk to the wreath and gives it some character. To wrap the yarn you can move the whole skein, or you can cut shorter lengths of yarn to work with. I wrap with the whole skein as I find it faster than working with smaller pieces. Glue down the other end of the yarn once you make it all the way around the wreath, cut the yarn from the wreath and move the surrounding yarn around to cover the end.

Arrange your stemmed decorations how you want them to appear on your wreath. Wrap the stems of the decorations together with the same yarn you used to wrap the wreath. Glue the yarn-wrapped stemmed on the wreath, and wrap more yarn around that part of the wreath to further attach the stems of the decorations to the wreath gluing the ends of the yarn to the back of the wreath.

Cut one roughly 7″ circle from your red and grey felt. You can free hand the circle, or use a mixing bowl to draw the circle on the felt before cutting. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect, so either method is fine. Cut two 5″ circles from each color of felt using the same method. Cut each circle in a spiral leaving a 1.5″ circle in the center of each spiral. Roll each spiral from the outside to the inside to create a felt flower. Flip the center circle under the spiral, and secure it with hot glue to hold the flower together. Once all the flowers are made, arrange them on the front of the wreath however you like, so long as they at least cover the stems of the other decorations.

Push pearl head push pins through the center of each flower to secure it to the wreath. Take your time when pushing the pins as you are going through hard hot glue, which can bend, or even break the pins, if you try to go too fast.

Glue your pearl-like beads in the center of the two larger flowers over the head of the pin.
