DIY Luggage Label

DIY Luggage Label

Luggage labels are easy to make - as long as you know how.

What you need

Approximately 6 x 8 inch (15 x20 cm)piece of leather
Strong card for stiffening
1/2 inch (2.5 cm) brass buckle
Fabric glue
Plastic sheet

Instructions

Cut 3 pieces of leather, each 3 x 4 inch (3.5x 10cm). In the centre of one, mark and cut out a rectangular window,
leaving a 1/2 inch border all the way around, for the front of the label.

Cut the stiffening card to measure 2 1/2 inch by 3 1/2 inch, and glue centrally on the wrong side of back section of label. Glue both sections of leather together around 2 of the long sides and 1 short side.

Spreading only a thin line of glue at the very edge. Press together to adhere well. Stitch all round these 3 sides about 1/8 inch in from the outer edge.

One end is left open for the address card to be slotted in. Cut a slot about 3/4 inch long through both pieces of leather along the open end. Cut leather for the strap 1 in. wide and 6 in. long.

Spread glue over entire back. When set, fold strap in half length ways and press down very firmly all along.

Cut one end to a neat point, and stitch all round the strap.

Attach buckle at straight end, and stitch end down on to strap. Thread pointed end through slot in label, ready to attach to a suitcase.

Cut plastic to fit and slot in place to protect your front address.

  1. For my luggage label I use a bright pink bra that I buy at Wal Mart. I attach it to the handle and let it hang so I can identify it quickly. The baggage handlers love it! They get a kick out of it and gives them a good laugh.

  2. Love it.
