Crochet Gingerbread Man

Crochet Gingerbread Man

This little fellow is adorable and oozes Christmas. Use him for present toppers, embellishments or simply hang him on the tree.

What you need

Worsted weight yarn
(your choice of color)
I used Red Heart warm brown
Tapestry needle
Crochet hook F or G (your choice)
Embellishments to decorate your little person however you wish

Instructions

FINISHED SIZE: approx. 8″ using F hook approx. 9″ using G hook
(you could even make a tiny one using thread and a small steel hook… to adorn your Christmas packages or whatever you wish)

This crochet project uses

HEAD (Make 2)

Ch3. Join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch3 (this will count as first dc throughout pattern) Work 13dc in ring. Join with sl st to beg ch3. {14dc}

Rnd 2: Ch3. Dc in same st as Ch3. 3dc in next st. *2dc in next st. 3dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. Fasten off {35dc}

Holding both head pieces wrong sides together, using a scrap of yarn and needle, Sew pieces together leaving 6sts free on each side (this is where the body will be connected).

Starting Body (worked in rounds, Do Not Turn)

Beginning at neck and working in the 12 sts left from joining the head, attach yarn to the 4th sc (from the right) of one side of the head.

Rnd 1: Ch3. Dc in same st as beg ch3. 2dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {24dc}

Rnd2: Ch3. Dc in each of next 3 sts. 2dc in each of next 4sts. 1dc in each of next 8 sts. 2dc in each of next 4sts. 1dc in each of last 4 sts. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {32dc}

Rnd 3: (forming first arm) Do NOT ch. Sl st in next 4sts. Ch3. 1dc in each of next 8sts. Sk next 23 sts (be sure to count in the first 4 sts you sl stitched in too) Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {9dc}

Rnd 4-5: Ch3. 1dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {9dc}

Rnd 6: Ch3 *Dec over next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {4dec/5dc} Fasten off.

(Second arm) Starting on the front of body. Sk first 7sts from first arm.

Rnd 1: attach yarn with sl st and Ch3. 1dc in each of next 8sts. Sk the rest of the sts around, and Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {9dc}

Rnd 2-4: Repeat rnds 4-6 of first arm. Fasten off.

Rest of Body

Starting on back side of gingerbread person, attach yarn to 4th st from the right. (you should have 7 free sts on each side of body)

Rnd 1: Ch3 (you will be working through sts you sl stitched in earlier) 1dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {14dc}

Rnd 2: Ch3. 1dc in each of next 2 sts. 2dc in each of next 2 sts. 1dc in each of next 5 sts. 2dc in each of next 2 sts. 1dc in each of last 2 sts. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {18dc}

Rnd 3: Ch3. 1dc in each of next 4sts. 2dc in next st. 1dc in each of next 8 sts. 2dc in next st. 1dc in each of last 3 sts. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {20dc}

Rnd 4: (Starting first leg) Ch3. 1dc in each of next 9 sts. Sk next 10 sts and Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {10dc}

Rnds 5-9: Ch 3. 1dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {10 dc}

Rnd 10: Ch3. *Dec over next 2 st. Repeat from * 3 more times. Dc in last st. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {4dec} Fasten off.

Second leg (Starting back on round 4 of body, attach yarn to back center of body) Ch3 (working around front and then to back again.. this is to keep the “seam” in the back) 1dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. {10dc}

Repeat rnds 5-10 of first leg. Fasten off.

Weave in all loose ends.

To attach a hanger simply thread a piece of ribbon or yarn through top of head.

NOW comes the “fun” part. LOL

Add lace, fabric paint, felt, ribbon, beads, sequins or anything else you want to personalize your little gingerbread person ….but most important.. just have fun with it
