Bunny Bag From Chenille Bedspread

Bunny Bag From Chenille Bedspread

What little girl wouldn't love this sweet bunny bag for Easter? Made using a chenille bedspread, this simple bag can be sewn and embellished in about an hour. Make one for a special little friend, or several as Easter hunt gift bags.

What you need

Scrap paper
Ruler
Scissors
White chenille bedspread
Easter or spring fabric
Straight pins
Sewing machine
Iron
Blush and paintbrush
Jute
Hot glue gun
1-inch white pom poms-two
1/2-inch pink pom pom-one
3/8-inch flat green buttons-two
1-inch flat white buttons-two
Sewing needle and thread
5/8-inch wide pink ribbon

Instructions

Step 1

Cut a 7-inch square from scrap paper. Round one corner of the square. Fold the square in half. Using the rounded corner as a guide, cut the matching corner in the same way. Unfold the square. This is the bag pattern. The rounded corners are the bottom of the bag.

Step 2

Cut two bag shapes from a white chenille bedspread for the outside of the bag, and two bag shapes from an Easter or spring colored fabric for the lining. Cut one 3-inch-wide by 22-inch-long strip from the chenille and another one from the lining fabric for the handles (ears).

Step 3

Place the two chenille bag shapes together and pin the sides and bottom. Note: If your chenille has a wrong side, the wrong side should be facing out. Put the two lining bag shapes together with the wrong sides facing out. Pin the sides and bottom. Sew the pinned bags using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Step 4

Turn the chenille bag right side out. Slip the wrong-side-out lining bag inside the chenille bag. Line up the top edges and pin. Sew around the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Fold 1 inch of the top edge to the outside as a cuff.

Step 6

Lay the bag on your work surface with the side you want as the front facing up. Apply 2-inch cheeks to the bag using a paintbrush and blush. Cut two 6-inch lengths of jute. Hold the jute together and tie a knot in the center. This is your bunny’s whiskers. Hot glue the whiskers to the center of the bag front (face). Apply hot glue to the top of the knot. Place two 1-inch white pom poms side-by-side over the knot. Glue a 1/2-inch pink pom pom above the white ones.

Step 7

Stitch two 3/8-inch flat green buttons above the pink nose for the eyes.

Step 8

Overlap the ends of the handle over the seams on the sides of the bag. Position the handle ends 2 inches below the top edge of the cuff. Center a 1-inch flat white button over a handle end. Sew the button to the handle and the bag. Repeat on the other end of the handle.

Step 9

Hand sew a running stitch across the width of the handle at the center top. Pull the thread to gather. Knot and cut the thread.

Step 10

Cut a 5/8-inch wide pink ribbon 24 inches long. Wrap the ribbon around the gathered center of the handle and tie into a bow. Trim the ends as desired.

All done!
